Sunday Brunch Again
Hey I totally forgot to tell you what I had for lunch on Sunday! Hey! Listen to this! The chef at Martin Wine Cellar took a big ol croissant and split it in half and FRENCH TOASTED IT which was beyond a fantastic idea. I wanted to share it but you weren’t there.

Los cubanos make good sandwiches, right?
The corner grocery about three blocks down from our place sells sandwiches at lunch. One of those sandwiches is the cuban, and man, it’s been a long time since I had a good cuban. Before today, that is. Because today I got that flat-pressed grilled delight filled with roast beast and ham and cheese and a little bit of pickle. Mmmmmm. Cuban.

Leftover Pizza
Prosciutto, avocado, pineapple, mozzarella, parmesan, bottled sauce, pre-made crust. Gonna have to step up to making crust and sauce from scratch. The crust and sauce were weak, but the toppings were awesome.

Minh Againh
Here’s my take on Cafe Minh: I met Brother O’Mara at his place of work for lunch today. We had planned on dining at the ol’ tried-and-true, Pho Tau Bay, for our Vietnamese food fix, but luckily remembered it was closed on Thursdays before we crossed the river to the Westbank. Still craving Asian, we took a promenade over to Cafe Minh on the corner of Canal and David in Mid-City. Here’s a...

Pho shoah
The missus and I walked to Cafe Minh today to check out what is ostensibly the closest real Vietnamese restaurant to where we live. I ordered the pho (or phở if you want to get fancy) because that’s what I do on my first visit to any Vietnamese joint. It was perfectly tasty, the broth was well crafted, the beef brisket was just tender enough, the beef sausage flavorful enough. Yet...

Self Promotion
Y’all. I love tumbling my lunch. I love it so much that sometimes, when I’m eating a really good dinner, I get a little sad because I can’t tumble it because it ISN’T LUNCH. So I’ve started a big ol’ food blog. In said food blog, I will talk about meals that aren’t lunch, restaurants, beer, wine, recipes, and whatever else winds up in my belly. THIS IS...

Turkey Sandwich with Doritos
I made a turkey sandwich with provolone cheese & dijon mustard on toasted white bread. I ate it with cool-ranch Doritos and a Cherry Coke Zero. I then proceeded on to have four chocolate chips-ahoy cookies. I did not photograph this. I just ate it without thinking of you at all. I apologize. I was very hungry. That is all.

The other evening I made a…salsa?…by sauteeing corn, green bell peppers, and onion in a little olive oil with salt, pepper, and cayenne. We didn’t use it all for dinner that night, so today I threw it back on the stove with some ham and got it all warmed up. This concoction went over some lettuce with cheese and avocado ranch dressing and I ate it all up.

Right. PRALINE BACON. Damn, brah. Also I had shrimp and grits with leeks, tasso gravy, and a yummy biscuit. But for realz, y’all. PRALINE. BACON.

Sunday brunch again
It’s that time! Today we went to Elizabeth’s in the Bywater. I had French toast (of French bread) stuffed with cream cheese and strawberries and topped with powdered sugar. But that is not the important part although it was quite awesome. The important part is this: For an appetizer I had PRALINE BACON. It was the most delicious bacon ever. Ever.

Sunday Brunch at Mere Bulles
(yeah, a day late… but does it really matter?) We joined a couple of friends for Sunday brunch at Mere Bulles in Brentwood (which, by the way, much cheaper than I would have expected). We all decided on the breakfast-plate-followed-by-lunch-plate strategy. So: Breakfast plate: chocolate chip pancake, crème brûlée french toast, bacon, potatoes, mixed fruit, coffee (black, as God...

Cheating
Since I got up late and ate a little bit late and who knows when I will actually eat my next meal I’m considering my breakfast to be brunch which is really lunch just early with some breakfast food. But mainly I want to say I JUST ATE FRIED FRENCH TOAST WITH BOURBON-VANILLA SYRUP. In my own home.

Man, I was totally short-circuiting this afternoon. On my way home from running un-fun errands, I realized I needed food BADLY. Luckily, I had anticipated just such an occasion when I was at the sto’ the other day and had HOT DOGS at home. Some may call me a blasphemer, but I ate them with ketchup. (I’ll do ‘em with yellow mustard and relish also, but we didn’t have any.)

Ham and baloney
Yesterday’s lunch: Ham and baloney sandwich on wheat bread with creole mustard, mayonnaise, green leaf lettuce and a single slice of American cheese. Today’s lunch: Ham and baloney sandwich on wheat bread with creole mustard, mayonnaise, green leaf lettuce and a single slice of American cheese. Probability that tomorrow’s lunch will be the exact same: High. Sometimes...

Once Again, with Feeling
Today was a repeat of yesterday’s Herby Turkey Sammy, but this time with a little bit of balsamic vinegar. Also, instead of potatoes, the side was beet chips. I think today’s was better than yesterday’s.

DON'T JUDGE ME
We had salad for dinner last night, for which I cooked some bacon and chopped it up into small morsels…bits, one might say. We didn’t eat them all. Today for lunch I spread peanut butter on some bread, over which were then sprinkled the remaining pork particles. Add to this another piece of bread, and I had a sandwich that was DELICIOUS AS LONG AS I DIDN’T THINK ABOUT WHAT I...

Almond Butter and Fruit Spread on Homemade Bread

Herby Turkey Sammy
Today was turkey, mixed greens and some fancy-pants garden herb havarti (with lovage from Kentucky) on homemade bread, liberally doused in olive oil and pressed in the grill. Smashed potatoes on the side. It didn’t have time for a photograph.

lafille's Pad Thai Peroration
Ok, so I FINALLY got some Thai food here in New Orleans. I was beginning to go through withdrawal. Today was my first day running around town without a chaperone, checking out places that interested me, and managing not to get lost in the process. I accomplished my goals of visiting GNO Cyclery and Octavia Books, then went to Basil Leaf for some Pad Thai on my way home. Any time I visit a new...

Leftover Madness
Christmas ham, potatoes, green beans, and spaghetti — yes, spaghetti — all warmed over in a big bowl.
Dec 29th
Yesterday we had brunch at Martin Wine Cellar, which is what you do on Sundays. Or what we do, at least. For my first visit as an official New Orleans resident, I figured I ought to have grits and grillades. From the New Orleans Cuisine blog: Grillades are made with Round Steak, of Beef or Veal, although you could use pork. This dish like many other greats from New Orleans, comes from meager...

Late Start = Brunch
Got a bit of a late start today. Thus, there was neither breakfast nor lunch, but rather brunch. Which was in the form of two eggs over medium atop two slices of deli ham (fried up a bit) atop two English muffin halves with a little homemade mayo. And it was good.

Stay Don't Go
Today I hung out with my parents and they fed me, which is almost always delightful. Lunch was homemade mac and cheese but it had all kinds of extra junk in it that made it extra delicious. Mom also made hot cocoa from real cocoa. Of course, all of this deliciousness was a ploy to get me not to move out of the state. To which I reply, “It will take more than cheese.” Now, if there...

Home-style
Today’s lunch was creamy peanut butter and strawberry preserves on wheat bread. Oh, and a satsuma for dessert. Man, if you’ve never had a satsuma orange you’re missing out. They’re so sweet, and the peels really do just fall right off. It’s not so much peeling as it is undressing. So good. I missed satsumas so much.
